Career
Guide Writer
Although we do not currently
have any job openings, we invite you to submit a resume for future consideration.
As a FabJob guide writer,
you will join our team of award-winning best-selling authors.
If you become a FabJob guide
writer, we will provide you with a template for our guides and you will
add career-specific content based on research and recommendations from
industry experts. For example, if the guide includes a chapter on starting
a business, the template will provide information about how to write a
business plan (among other advice on starting a business), and you will
write a sample business plan for that particular type of business.
Assignments may involve researching
and writing an entire guide (adding a minimum of 15,000 or 20,000 words
to the template), or researching and writing part of a guide. Payment is
on a flat fee (non-royalty) basis. Assignments pay $1,500 to $2,000 U.S.,
depending on length, for writing a complete FabJob guide.
Payment
is on acceptance (normally within a couple of weeks of submission). Using
our template, you should be able to complete one guide per month part-time.
We also publish authors' bios in the guide, and provide copies of the e-book
as well as the print book when published.
In addition to submitting
publication-ready manuscripts by the agreed upon deadlines, the writers
we hire have:
-
Exceptional academic research
skills
-
An engaging writing style
-
Respect for copyright
-
Experience writing respected
"how to" information, preferably books (most FabJob authors have written
for or worked with the editorial departments of other respected publishers
such as World Book Encyclopedia
If you are willing and able
to research and write FabJob guides according to our template, for the
pay noted above, please submit several paragraphs about your research and
writing credentials, using the form at the bottom of this page. Please
include in your submission a list of any careers or businesses you are
particularly interested in writing about.
We
appreciate all applications, and will provide further details about assignments
to writers we are interested in working with.
Virtual
Assistant - Editorial
Although we do not currently
have any job openings, we invite you to submit a resume for future consideration.
If you would like a rewarding
editorial position with a leading indie book publisher, consider working
with FabJob.com, named "the #1 place to get published online" by Writer's
Digest.
We're seeking a virtual assistant
to work on a part-time contract basis with our editorial department. Reporting
to the Managing Editor, the position will involve working on editorial
tasks and may also include coordinating the work of FabJob writers and
editors.
You will assist with editorial
tasks such as researching, writing, fact-checking, and proofreading for
new FabJob print books and e-books which are being revised or expanded
for print publication. After you have worked on several FabJob projects,
you may be asked to help prepare and distribute editorial and design schedules.
Hours of work are flexible
and you may work part-time or full-time. This is a work-at-home position,
so we accept applications from anywhere in the United States or Canada.
While pay is negotiable, please keep in mind that this is a junior editorial
position for an indie book publisher.
The ideal candidate is organized,
skilled at coordinating projects, has a positive "can do" attitude,
excellent written communication skills, and a strong work ethic. Previous
paid or volunteer experience relevant to FabJob is an asset.
If you feel you are a good
fit with what we are looking for, please submit several paragraphs about
yourself using the form at the bottom of this page. (Follow the instructions
listed below under "How to Apply to FabJob.")
Other
Positions
Although we have no other
current job openings, we expect to add to our team in future, so we encourage
you to submit an application using the form at the bottom of this page
if you have experience and skills that will help us sell more FabJob
guides.
We think it's pretty clear
what our company is all about, but we've learned we have to come right
out and say: FabJob does not hire for most of
the careers we publish guides about.
For those who have figured
out that we're book publishers and not an employment agency, you may be
interested to know that the 20 jobs we don't hire for which we have received
the most applications for are (listed alphabetically): actor,
cartoonist,
celebrity
assistant, children's
book author, cruise
ship worker, event
planner, fashion
designer, flight
attendant, interior
decorator, massage
therapist, model,
motivational
speaker, mystery
shopper, personal
shopper, recording
artist, songwriter,
travel
writer, TV
reporter, video
game designer, wedding
planner.
For anyone still hoping we'll
hire them for any of the jobs listed in the previous paragraph, sorry,
but we cannot read or respond to applications for any of those jobs. If
you want one of these jobs order
a FabJob guide to learn how to break into the career of your dreams.
How
to Apply to FabJob's Editorial Department
If you are applying for
a position as a writer or editorial assistant in the FabJob editorial department,
please read and follow all application instructions, including the
Dos and Don'ts below.
Although we usually receive
hundreds of applications for every available editorial position, if you
follow the dos and don'ts below you will already be ahead of 95% of applicants.
Dos
for Editorial Applicants
-
Do read
the requirements for the position and any other recommended information
before applying.
-
This should go without saying,
but we've found it needs to be said: It's important to actually follow
the application instructions including this list of Dos and Don'ts.
-
Do provide specific information
about your qualifications directly related to the position you are
applying for. We are currently receiving more than 500 applications for
every editorial position so it is important to show us, in a well-written
application, why you are the ideal person for the job. (If you need help
with this, our website has a lot of fabulous free advice about how to apply
for a job.)
-
Do tell us your complete Myers-Briggs
Type if you are applying for any position that requires research skills
(i.e. any writing or editing position).
-
If you are applying for a writing
position, do mention any particular small business topics you have
expertise in which fit with the FabJob product line but which we have not
yet published guides about.
-
Do include the words I have
followed the application instructions somewhere in your application.
-
Do remember to proofread
before hitting the submit button.
Don'ts
for Editorial Applicants
-
Don't address us as dear
sirs or make up a new name for our company (either FabJob or FabJob.com
are correct, whereas other variations on our name, such as Fabio and Fatjobs,
are not).
-
Don't use the form to apply
for any position unrelated to our business as a book publisher.
For example, it is a waste of your time to apply to be a fashion designer,
mystery shopper, motivational speaker, event planner, etc.
-
Don't use this form to ask us
for career advice. For fabulous advice,
order
a FabJob guide.
-
Don't submit a resume
unless we ask for one. (For editorial positions we want to see how well
you write, and a resume doesn't show that.)
-
Don't disclose personal information
such as references to your health, family, religion, childhood, or age.
-
Don't provide little information
about
yourself and ask us to check out your website or contact you with more
information about a job. Because of the number of applications we receive,
we can follow up only with people we are interested in working with.
The form below can be used to
submit up to a 400 word application for the jobs described above with FabJob.
Due to the volume of applications we receive, we cannot read or respond
to other submissions.
When you submit the form
it will take you to a page that acknowledges your submission. We will respond
personally if we are interested in following up.

IMPORTANT
How
to Spot a Fake Job Ad
Scammers post
fake job ads in newspapers or online, claiming to offer positions working
for respected companies. Here are a few tips about how to avoid applying
for fake jobs with any company:
-
Check the company's
own website to see which positions they have available. You'll see from
this page that FabJob.com does NOT have positions
for "call center agents", "customer service representatives", "mystery
shoppers" or "secret shoppers".
-
Where possible, apply
through the hiring company's own website. For any FabJob.com position,
you should apply on this webpage.
-
Don't submit an application
to a free email address. Legitimate employers let you REPLY to email addresses
containing their company name and don't use Yahoo, Gmail, iPal, or other
emails. (Remember that a scammer can fake a "from" email address; what's
important is the address they ask you to reply to.)
-
Don't send a company
money for a job! Employers pay you; not the other way around.
-
Please contact
the company if you see a job ad that appears to be fraudulent so
they can take action to get the fake ad removed.
